Maxine Chapin, a long-time member of the Ellenville Central School District Board of Education and a tireless advocate for her students, has received the Ulster County School Board Association’s Distinguished Friend of Education Award.

Lisa A. Wiles, Superintendent of Ellenville Schools, presented the award to Mrs. Chapin at the Association’s annual dinner, held May 25 at the Stonehedge Restaurant in West Park.

"Maxine has always been an advocate for what was right, and she has always been an advocate for our student,” said Mrs. Wiles, who praised Mrs. Chapin as a selfless, enthusiastic, and tireless supporter of public education. “Maxine Chapin is a superstar.”

Before serving on the Ellenville School Board, Mrs. Chapin taught elementary, middle, and high school, and as a volunteer tutor prepared countless students for the Social Studies Regents examinations. She also represented Ellenville on the Ulster BOCES Board of Education for many years, where her colleagues said she fought not only for Ellenville’s students, but for students across the county.

In all, the Ulster County School Board’s Association celebrated 10 local residents, one from each of the county’s school districts and Ulster BOCES, for their dedication and commitment to students and schools. The honorees, each representing a different school district and nominated by their local Board of Education, were feted at the association’s second annual Distinguished Friend of Education Awards Dinner.

Krista Barringer, president of the Ulster County School Boards Association, said the award dinner is an opportunity to recognize the people who give their time unselfishly to their students and schools. Barringer is also a member of the Ulster BOCES Board of Education, representing Saugerties Central School District.

“We really cherish everyone who is here,” she said as she welcomed the honorees to the event. “You truly have done amazing things in your schools and we thank you.”

Mrs. Chapin’s fellow honorees were Alan Barone, Highland Central School District; James F. Shaughnessy, Jr., Kingston City School District; John Cantone, Marlboro Central School District; Mark Masseo, New Paltz Central School District; Levon Helm (in memoriam), Onteora Central School District; Nancy Taylor, Rondout Valley Central School District; Mary Buehl, Saugerties Central School District; Sherry Palen, Wallkill Central School District, and Ian Winter, Ulster BOCES.
