Ellenville High School (EHS) is proud to announce that seniors Sarah Stevens and Ethan Alexander have been selected as the New York State Athletic Administrators Association’s Chapter 9 recipients for the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) Scholarship Awards. These awards recognize the distinguished scholastic, leadership, and sportsmanship attributes of high school student-athletes across the country.

Sarah is currently ranked first in her senior class. The National Honor Society member earned a place on the High Honor Roll all throughout high school, and received Rensselaer Medals in recognition of her achievement in both math and science.

The daughter of Wayne and Kimberly Stevens of Ellenville, Sarah earned several Mid-Hudson Scholar Athlete Awards for her contributions to the Varsity Soccer and Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field teams. As captain of the Indoor team in 2019-2020, she led her team to their second consecutive Section IX Class B Championship title.

Sarah has served as Class President of EHS, and has been involved in the Drama Club, Environmental Club, and Chamber Singers. She has also worked as a local lifeguard and water safety instructor, and volunteered for the Ed Jacobs Youth Soccer League.

In a letter of recommendation, Ellenville’s Director of Health, PE, and Athletics, Kermit Moyer, praised Sarah for her caring nature, positive work ethic, and strong leadership qualities.

“Sarah challenges herself and consistently puts forth great effort during practice sessions and competitions,” Moyer said. “She deeply cares about her teammates and she is well respected by her peers and the adults she interrelates with.”

Ethan is currently ranked second in his class at EHS. He is an esteemed member of the National Honor Society who has maintained placement on the High Honor Roll all throughout his high school career.

The son of Michael and Amie Alexander of Wurtsboro, Ethan was a member of the Varsity Football team at EHS from 2017 to 2020. As team captain in 2019, he led the Blue Devils to the 8-man Football State Regional Championship. He also competed on Ellenville’s Varsity Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field teams for several years.

In addition to sports, Ethan was involved in the school’s Environmental Club and Jazz Band. He belongs to the Ellenville Reformed Church and volunteers for the Summitville Fire Company #1.

“Ethan has exemplified all of the character traits of an exemplary student-athlete,” said Moyer. “His noteworthy academic accomplishments, his impressive leadership, and his exceptional contributions to the athletic program in Ellenville made him an outstanding candidate for this award.”

The purpose of the NIAAA Scholarship Awards are to promote, facilitate, and create the knowledge and understanding of the vital role that interscholastic sports play in the educational system. Sarah’s and Ethan’s applications have now moved forward to be considered for the New York State Scholarship Award, worth $250.
