On August 5, summer school students at Ellenville Jr/Sr High School received an up-close look at drone technology during a visit from Deputy Dave Stoutenburgh of the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office.
Students learned how local law enforcement uses drones for a variety of purposes, including searching for suspects, assisting with rescue missions, monitoring brushfires, and supporting emergency response efforts.
Deputy Stoutenburgh showcased two of the department’s drones and explained how they operate. Students from both the Ellenville and Rondout Valley school districts were able to scan a QR code to follow the drones’ flights through a companion app. They also took turns wearing specialized goggles that allowed them to see through the drones’ “eyes” as they soared overhead.
Throughout the demonstration, students had the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the technology, including the grant that made the purchase of the drones possible, how much the drones weigh, and how officers keep them charged and ready for use.
The hands-on demonstration gave students an opportunity to see how emerging technology can be put to practical use in their own community while learning more about the work of local law enforcement.
Ellenville Jr/Sr High School thanks Deputy Stoutenburgh and the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office for taking the time to provide this engaging and educational experience for our summer school students.
