Student holding their poetry

Congratulations to Chapter 2 Ellenville P-TECH Academy scholar Anarivis “Ana” Gomez, who had the honorable distinction this fall of winning the Hamilton Poetry Contest that was conducted by P-TECH in collaboration with the Gilder Lehrman Foundation.

After studying the historical context behind the musical Hamilton and attending a matinee performance of it on Broadway, Ana, like her fellow students, applied the same poetic devices that she learned were used in the musical to create an original persona poem in the voice of an American Revolutionary hero. The entries were judged by English teachers and the head of the English Department, and Ana’s poem, titled “Mercy Otis Warren” was chosen as the winner!

“My experience with writing the poem for Hamilton was positively interesting,” said Ana. “I surprised myself by coming up with a great poem on my own, through research and pulling together sentences that not only made sense but had a good flow.”

“Ana always gives all her effort to successfully complete her goals,” said English teacher Noelia Santiago. “She truly exemplifies responsibility, leadership, and kindness, which makes her an integral part of our Ellenville P-TECH family!”
