Devices

A new Statewide law will take effect this fall that prohibits students from using personal internet-enabled devices during the school day. Signed by Governor Kathy Hochul on May 6, 2025, the legislation mandates a ban on smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and similar devices in all public schools throughout New York State.

School districts do not have the authority to opt out of this requirement. In accordance with the law, the Ellenville Central School District has adopted a new Board of Education policy effective August 1, 2025. This policy will prohibit the use of internet-enabled personal devices during the entire school day—including during recess, class changes, bathroom visits, study halls, and in the cafeteria.

The goal of this legislation is to reduce distractions and to create an optimal learning environment for students. While technology can be a powerful educational tool, its personal use during the school day has been shown to hinder focus, reduce engagement, and interfere with academic performance.

The District is committed to ensuring that families remain connected and informed, and a system will be in place to allow for necessary communication between students and their parents/guardians during school hours.

More information will be shared on this page as it becomes available.
