WELV 21st Anniversary

On April 20, local radio station WELV marked its 21st "birthday" with a special live broadcast from the Ellenville Elementary School Library Media Center, continuing what is quickly becoming a meaningful annual tradition.

Throughout the school day, elementary students had the opportunity to step behind the microphone and assist Radio Operations Manager Alan Buckler as he DJed live on the air. Students from various grade levels took turns introducing songs and sharing messages, gaining hands-on experience in broadcasting.

The tradition began on April 27, 2015, with a live broadcast celebrating WELV's 10th anniversary -- organized in collaboration between Library Media Specialist Sarah Mitchell and Radio Operations Manager Alan Buckler. The 20th anniversary broadcast in 2025 proved such a success that the two decided to make the Elementary School visit an annual event. This year's celebration marked the third time WELV has broadcast live from the library.

"It's a great opportunity for students to see what's possible," Mitchell noted, adding that the experience helps build excitement for joining the radio station when they reach the Junior/Senior High School.

WELV has long been a cornerstone of the Ellenville school community, providing students with real-world experience in media production, communication, and broadcasting. Events like this not only celebrate the station's legacy but also ensure its future by encouraging student involvement from an early age.

As the station enters its third decade, the annual Elementary School broadcast serves as both a celebration of its history and a reminder of its continued impact on students and the broader community.

WELV can be heard on 107.9 FM and is also available on Channel 20 through Spectrum Cable.
