Three Hall of Fame inductees

The Ellenville Central School District celebrated four outstanding former Blue Devil athletes during its eighth annual Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, held on October 17 at Ellenville Elementary School.

This year's inductees—Raynard Shorter (Class of 1988), Tyler O’Bryant (Class of 2012), Pasquale Lamaestra (Class of 1971), and Kelly Mansell (Class of 1996)—were recognized for their exceptional athletic accomplishments, leadership, and lasting contributions to the Ellenville community.

Family members, friends, former coaches, teachers, and community members gathered to honor the inductees and reflect on the people and experiences that helped shape their journeys.

Director of Physical Education, Health, and Athletics Matthew Salamone opened the ceremony by emphasizing that the Hall of Fame celebrates more than athletic records and championships. It also recognizes perseverance, character, teamwork, and the enduring spirit of Blue Devil athletics.

Raynard Shorter, Ellenville's all-time leading basketball scorer with 1,455 career points, was named the 1988 Mid-Hudson Athletic League (MHAL) Player of the Year and Daily Freeman Player of the Year. He went on to earn a basketball scholarship to the New York Institute of Technology. Former Coach Lee Augustine recalled Shorter's early promise, leadership, and sportsmanship, while Shorter used his acceptance speech to thank the family members, coaches, and teammates who supported his success.

Tyler O’Bryant made his mark in track and field, winning the New York State Division II 200-meter championship in 2011 and the 100-meter title in 2012. He also earned numerous Section IX and MHAL championships and qualified for the Indoor National Championships. Former Coach Phil Althouse praised O’Bryant's speed, determination, and resilience. Although unable to attend, O’Bryant shared a heartfelt message thanking his coaches, the District, and the community for their support.

Pasquale Lamaestra made history as Ellenville's first student to earn 12 varsity letters and the first Blue Devil wrestler to be named Section IX Most Valuable Wrestler. Following graduation, he served 30 years in the United States Marine Corps, where he continued coaching and mentoring others. Former Coach Pete Meoli highlighted Lamaestra's work ethic, humility, and leadership. In his acceptance remarks, Lamaestra encouraged attendees to recognize and appreciate those whose everyday contributions often go unnoticed.

Kelly Mansell earned 11 Section IX Class C championships and eight MHAL championships in cross-country and track and field. She also helped the 1992 New York State Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) cross-country team capture a national title. Mansell became the first female athlete in Ellenville history to receive a Division I athletic scholarship, continuing her running career at Bowling Green State University. Former Coach Jack Carter recalled her competitive spirit and ability to inspire her teammates. During her acceptance speech, Mansell expressed gratitude to the Ellenville community, describing it as her “village” and reflecting on the relationships and memories that shaped her life.

Throughout the ceremony, a common theme emerged: Behind every successful athlete is a network of coaches, teammates, family members, mentors, and community members who help make those achievements possible.

Salamone concluded the celebration by thanking the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee, Board of Education, staff, presenters, and everyone who contributed to the event. He also encouraged community members to nominate deserving Blue Devil athletes for future induction classes.

Congratulations to the Class of 2026! Their achievements and contributions will continue to inspire future generations of Blue Devils.
